Rhetorical/Argument Analysis Writing
Task:
For this assignment, you need to write a 2 page rhetorical analysis of an article.For this analysis, you need to follow the essay structure. Use the instructions below for guidance:
Introduction:
- Make a statement about how writers use the power of argument to achieve their purpose of persuading or influencing people.
- Introduce the article you are analyzing.
- Who is the writer?
- Give the full title of the paper, indicate when it was written
- What were the circumstances under which the paper was written
- Who is the authors intended audience
- What is the writers claim?
- What do you think was the writers purpose? Why is he/she making the argument? (See: Ch 1 Why We Make Arguments)

- What did the writer want the reader to conclude?
- What is the occasion for the argument (time)
- Whatare the rhetorical appeals (emotional, logical, ethical) used by theauthor? Which appeals will you discuss in your analysis? This is yourpreview statement.

5. How didthe writer use rhetorical appeals to accomplish his or her purpose? Wasthe writer successful? The answers to these questions can be summarizedas a thesis statement. This is your central argument.

Body Paragraphs:
Each paragraph in the body should have a topic sentence and a unified focus.
You should write one paragraph on each of the rhetorical strategies and appeals that you mention in the introduction.
Questions to consider in body paragraphs:
1- What kind of argument is the writer making? (See Ch. 1 Kinds of Argument – Fact, Definition, Evaluation, Proposal arguments)
– Can you detect any misinformation in the kind of argument being made?
2- What is the definition of the rhetorical appeal you are writing about? (define it)
(one paragraph for Q 1 and 2)
3-How do the examples contribute to the writers purpose? (in what waysdo the examples add to the writer’s overall purpose of why they aremaking the argument (this goes back to point 4 in the introduction.)
4-How does the appeal contribute to the writers purpose? (How does theappeal used in the article support WHY the writer is making thatargument)
(One paragraph for Q 3 and 4)
5- What is yourevaluation of the writers use of that rhetorical appeal in regard tohis / her purpose? (this is your analysis of the writer’s rhetoricalappeal)
6- How do examples from the article illustrate the use ofthat appeal? (Bring examples from the article to show this appeal) (Use 2examples for each kind of rhetorical strategies)
(You shouldwrite one paragraph on each of the rhetorical strategies and appealsthat you mention in the introduction. So, If the writer used 1 kind ofrhetorical strategies, you should write one paragraph for Q 5 and 6. Ifhe used all the three kinds of rhetorical appeals, you should write 3paragraph to answer question 5 and 6 for each rhetorical strategy)
Draw a Conclusion:
Inthe conclusion, summarize the main points of your analysis to explainits significance and to draw a clear and specific conclusion.
Questions to consider for the conclusion:
- Was the author successful in using the various rhetorical appeals and strategies for the intended audience and purpose?
- What changes might you recommend to the author to better achieve his/her purpose?
- What lessons have you learned by writing a rhetorical analysis?
