This graded discussion is based on Chapter 6, Deviance and Social Control. This chapter talked about some major theories and social concepts that relate to the sociological study of deviance. I want you to watch the video on the Indian boy with deformed hands first. It is found in the module and I also pasted the link below: (Fyi…this is a short clip, there is a longer documentary on this young boy (he is older now), I found it on youtube for those who are interested in his story).

1) Give an example of social control found in the video. How is social control impacting this young boy? Compare your answer(s) with your classmates. That is, do you agree or disagree with your fellow online classmates?

2) Based on the video, give an example of a negative sanction, and then, an example of a positive sanction (this may be more difficult, but try and find a positive in the video). Compare your answers with your classmates. That is, do you agree or disagree with your fellow online classmates?

3) Xenophobia is the fear of “foreigners.” And, this does NOT always mean fear of people outside of your culture or country. Well this concept applies to the video for sure. Discuss any signs of xenophobia you see in the video.
